ISOLATED YOUTH

Axel: Il gruppo è formato da me, mio fratello William, Westberg Larsson e Andreas Geidemark.

Axel: Altre influenze sono poi state vecchie band come The Birthday Party e Velvet Underground, così come anche qualche artista svedese tipo Stina Nordenstame e Karin Dreijer.

Come mai?

Cosa attenderci a breve tempo dagli Isolated Youth?

ISOLATED YOUTH

STOCKHOLM SYNDROME

Interview by Martin Downing

Hailing from Stockholm, Isolated Youth have fast become one of Europe’s most exciting new post-punk bands, releasing debut EP ‘Warfare’ on 12inch vinyl with Fabrika records, February 2019. Known for their distinctly original sound, engrossing emotive vocals and intense live show, Isolated Youth are rapidly capturing the hearts of Post Punk fans across the globe with their breath of fresh air approach and youthful charm.

Welcome to Ascension magazine and thanks for doing the interview. I’ll begin by asking if you could please introduce yourselves and let us know how you came to be?

Axel: It’s me and my brother William, Egon Westberg Larsson and Andreas Geidemark that the band consist of. Me and William are brothers, and Egon and Andreas have been close to us for a long time. We came together quite naturally, all similar to each other, all originating from the cold countryside of Sweden. It did not take long until we found ourselves playing music together, and soon we felt a strong connection with each other.

You have a really great unique post-punk sound that I find quite difficult to compare, aside to feeling a strong Scandinavian vibe. What music has played an influence on Isolated Youth and contributed towards the sound you’ve formed?

William: When it comes to relationship between tones, composer Arvo Pärt is an important name. His work is brilliant.

Axel: Some other influences are past bands like Birthday Party and Velvet Underground that have inspired us, along with some Swedish artists like Stina Nordenstam and Karin Dreijer.

My first introduction to Isolated Youth was through Qual's remix of your song ‘Safety’. Both the remix and video really captured my attention. How did both come about?

Andreas: We were playing as support for Lebanon Hanover in our home town Stockholm and became good friends with them. From there on we sent our unreleased recording of ’Safety’ to William Maybelline who wanted to do a remix as ”Qual”. Luckily, he booked a gig in Stockholm not long after so we got the chance to hang out and shoot the material for what would become a music video for the remix. I had equipment enough to both shoot and edit it myself.

Fabrika records is a great record label. You must have been very happy for your first EP to be released through them given their catalogue of great acts such as Lebanon Hanover, She Past Away & Buzz Kull to name a few. How did your pairing come about and have you plans to continue working together in the future?

Axel: We opened for Lebanon Hanover in Stockholm, which resulted in us attracting Fabrika’s attention, due to Lebanon Hanover talking to them about us. When we later sent a handmade letter to Fabrika, the process was quite short. We are very happy to be working with Fabrika.

What influenced you to call your recent EP ‘Warfare’?

William: I suppose it is a call to arms in a spiritual sense… an attempt to have destruction followed by beauty.

I’ve read that you strive to be as honest as possible in your music, which is a quality I personally find an endearing trait in music. Do you feel like honesty is currently being lost and why do you find it an important factor to include? With that in mind also, are there any lyrical topics that you find yourself being very honest about?

William: All too many are evading honesty in exchange for comfort.… If the texts weren’t honest they wouldn’t rhyme with our music and I am quite sure our expression would lose its substance. My lyrics circle around emotional bonds, hopes and wishes, but also fears, threats and societal wounds. I try not to shy away from what I see and feel, in any sense.

The production on your Debut EP ‘Warfare’ is great. Where did you record and what motivated your decisions surrounding its recording and production?

Egon: We recorded "Warfare" at Studio Kvastis located in the southern part of Stockholm. Our ambition was to capture the energy from our live shows. The recording was done in one session and the majority of the instruments were recorded simultaneously to keep the dynamic of the band alive. We had the opportunity to work with some great people both in the studio and later on in the mixing and mastering process, who all understood the essence of what we were trying to create.

How does Isolated Youth approach song writing?

William: The songs are written by me and Axel in our home. We have a very close understanding of each other as if we hear the same thing before it is played. The songs are then mended by us four in our rehearsal space until they are finished.

You have a very intense presence both live and in your music videos. Have any of you been in previous bands or had experience in performance prior to Isolated Youth?

Egon: No, Isolated Youth is our first major musical project. Although all members have had experience with their respective instruments previously. I think the key is to rehearse a lot and to be passionate about what you are doing.

The video for ‘Safety’ is great and looks like it was a large project to put together. How did you manage to get access to the castle for filming and how long did it take you to complete? Was there an overarching message you were aiming to project to your audience with it?

Andreas: Yes, it took some planning and preparing together with our great director Jörgen Brennicke. But when we got a green light on the location which was through an acquaintance of ours, it went pretty fast. It was a cold winter day to cope with, but I think it works with what we wanted the feel of the video to be like. Raw and direct, as the message of our song.

If you could support one band or artist on a worldwide tour, who would that be and why?

Axel: We have supported Lebanon Hanover a few times, so if we were to support any band, it might as well be them, as we like them both personally and musically.

What should we expect to see from Isolated Youth for the rest of 2019? Do we have long to wait for a debut album?

William: Things are on the move!
