I Convex Model provengono da Salonicco e fanno parte della nuova scena minimal dark wave ellenica con all'attivo due album (in uscita per Kernkrach il nuovo "Quantity Of Motion") e parecchie tracce su compilations.....Il loro sound, synth analogici, basso, batteria e voce colpisce al cuore!

Abbiamo fatto due chiacchiere con Stavi e Nick, compagni nell'arte e nella vita....

1. Nikos, tastierista e cantante dei Convex Model, ha un ricco background musicale degli anni '70 come Brian Eno, Tangerine Dream, Can etc ... Come hanno influito questi ascolti su questo nuovo album? CM: Indubbiamente, le nostre influenze musicali ci definiscono fino a un certo punto, non solo personalmente, ma anche come band e questo ovviamente può essere ascoltato nel nostro suono.Anche riguardo alla produzione di questo album, abbiamo cercato di dargli alcune caratteristiche degli anni '70 / '80. O lo scegliamo deliberatamente o no, la nostra estetica è, per la maggior parte, dovuta alle cose che abbiamo ascoltato e amato nella musica. E questo emerge nelle nostre composizioni spontaneamente e spesso inconsciamente. Tuttavia la nostra band si impegna molto per avere la propria identità e un suono distinto. 2. Potete dire alcune cose sulla registrazione di lp? Siete andati in uno studio professionale? CM: Fino ad ora, registravamo tutto nel nostro studio di casa. Questa volta abbiamo avuto anche registrazioni di batteria, quindi sarebbe stato impossibile registrare a casa. Negli ultimi 8 mesi abbiamo affittato uno studio insieme a un'altra band e abbiamo cercato di equipaggiarlo correttamente. È lì che hanno avuto luogo le registrazioni con l'aggiunta di alcune attrezzature extra che abbiamo noleggiato per alcuni giorni. Quindi, puoi capire che abbiamo provato di nuovo a fare tutto con un approccio fai-da-te, che è stato un processo piuttosto impegnativo ma anche molto eccitante. 3. Lena, l'altra tastierista del gruppo, è un'insegnante di flauto in una scuola di musica;

il vostro batterista, Kyriakos, suona anche la batteria in un gruppo death metal ... Come riescono a combinare questi vari interessi? CM: Sì, e anche George per esempio, il nostro bassista, è un grande fan di Sarah e Factory Records e un appassionato collezionista di vinili. Crediamo nella diversità e nell'unicità di ogni persona e lo stesso vale per tutti i membri della nostra band. Ogni personalità, ogni persona e i loro diversi interessi e abilità contribuiscono in modo significativo al processo collettivo di creazione di musica o arte in generale. Preferiamo essere aperti non solo come band ma anche come ascoltatori. Inoltre, non dovremmo dimenticare che nella storia della musica, ci sono così tanti esempi di artisti che sono stati coinvolti in molti generi diversi. Prendiamo ad esempio Aynslay Dunbar, il batterista, che ha suonato nelle più diverse bands, dalla band di Frank Zappa, Lou Reed, David Bowie a Whitesnake. O Simon Phillips, che ha suonato in 801 (Phil Manzanera e Brian Eno), o nella band degli anni '80 Our Daughter's Wedding, ed è la stessa persona che ha suonato anche in Judas Priest. Quello che stiamo cercando di dire è che non puoi indossare i paraocchi nell'arte, ci sono solo le cose che ti piacciono e le cose chenon ti piacciono e questo è totalmente soggettivo, niente di più, niente di meno. 4. È interessante che i testi siano scritti da Stavi, un membro del gruppo che non suona alcun strumento nella band. Stavi era la cantante (è traduttrice e insegnante di tedesco) della brano "Nie Frei" che faceva parte di una raccolta della Kernkrach (Rekordfahrt Negativ II) un anno fa. Tutte le altre canzoni di CM sono scritte da lei in inglese e cantate da Nikos. Stavi, come hai resistito alla tentazione di cantare un'altra canzone nel secondo lp? CM: Ci sono così tanti esempi di band che consideravano i loro "parolieri" membri uguali del gruppo. Ricordiamo Keith Reid, paroliere di ogni canzone di Procol Harum, o Peter Sinfield, paroliere e co-fondatore di King Crimson, che ha anche scritto i testi inglesi del leggendario gruppo italiano Premiata Forneria Marconi; o Stanley Warren, che ha scritto testi meravigliosi per Silver Apples. Nella nostra band, ci sentiamo liberi di assumere ruoli a volte diversi, che hanno a che fare con musica o pittura o immagini ecc. Il principale contributo di Stavi alla band è quello di scrivere i testi e di incorporarli nella musica prodotta dagli altri quattro membri. "Nie Frei" è stata una creazione spontanea insieme a Nikos, ci è piaciuta e abbiamo mantenuto la canzone. Quindi, non ha a che fare con "la tentazione", ma piuttosto con la libertà di esprimerti come ti senti in un momento particolare e questa libertà è qualcosa che ogni membro della band ha. 5. La musica in questo nuovo LP è più ricco, più orientato agli anni '70 rispetto al suono puro synth del primo LP ... Qual è stato il motivo di questa mossa? CM: Non c'è una ragione specifica per questo, quando qualcuno crea qualcosa, non ha necessariamente in mente ragioni precise, che possono essere spiegate con la logica, senti solo il bisogno e la necessità di fare musica e tu ci provi e lo fai. Come abbiamo accennato nella tua prima domanda, abbiamo molte influenze diverse, non solo dal suono puro synth, come lo chiami tu. Una cosa che possiamo dire, tuttavia, è che tutti i synth analogici con cui suoniamo sono modelli originali degli anni '70 / '80 e, in combinazione con il basso e la batteria, il nostro suono è ovviamente collegato al suono di quel periodo. 6.Potete parlare un po'della scena greca? CM: La scena greca era ed è ancora abbastanza limitata. Negli anni '80 c'erano alcune etichette indipendenti, come Creep Records e Smash Records che aiutarono significativamente a creare uno spazio per questa particolare musica e per i gruppi che la rappresentavano, come Metro Decay, Headleaders, Art of Parties, Reporters, Villa 21, Yell-o-Yell, Fear Condition, South of No North ecc. Più tardi, intorno agli anni 2000, alcune altre etichette, come la Eirkti Records, hanno ripublicato rari lavori degli anni '80, ad esempio Xoris Perideraio, Chapter 24 ecc. Più negli ultimi anni c'è stato un risveglio del genere, non solo in Grecia ma anche all'estero. Per quanto riguarda la Grecia, alcune delle etichette moderne che promuovono nuove bande sono Geheimnis, Man Out Of A Man, Fabrika Records ecc. Alcune delle bande greche, che sono attive al momento (riguardanti discografia e concerti dal vivo), sono: Selofan, Tango Mangalore, Incirrina, Data Fragments, Kalte Nacht, The Man & His Failures, Era of Fear, Radio Sect, Dramachine ecc.

Convex Model come from Thessaloniki and are part of the new Hellenic minimal dark wave scene with two albums to be released (the new "Quantity Of Motion" is out for Kernkrach) and several tracks on compilations ..... Their analogue synth sound , bass, drums and voice hits the heart! We had a chat with Stavi and Nick, companions in art and in life ....

1.Nikos, synth player and singer of Convex Model, has a rich 70's music background, influenced by Eno, Tangerine dream, Can etc... How did these influences impact on this new creation? CM: Undoubtedly, our music influences define us up to a certain point not only personally, but also as a band and this can obviously be heard in our sound. Even regarding the production of this album, we tried to give to it some '70s/'80s features. Either we choose it deliberately or not, our aesthetic is, for its most part, due to the things that we have listened to and loved in music. And this emerges in our compositions spontaneously and often unconsciously. However, and most importantly, our band puts a lot of effort into having its own identity and distinct sound. 2.Can you tell us a few things about the recording of the lp? Did you go to a professional studio? CM: Until now, we used to record everything in our home studio. This time we also had drum recordings, so it would be impossible to record at home. In the last 8 months we have been renting a studio together with another band and try to equip it properly. That's where the recordings took place with the addition of some extra equipment that we rented for a few days. So, you can understand that we tried again to do everything with a DIY approach, which was a quite demanding but also a very exciting process. 3.Lena, the other synth player of the group, is a flute teacher at a music school; your drummer, Kyriakos, also plays the drums at a death metal group...How do you manage to combine these various interests? CM: Yes, and George for example, our bass player, is a big fan of Sarah and Factory Records and a passionate vinyl collector. We believe in the diversity and uniqueness of every person and the same applies to all our band members. Every personality, every character and their different interests and skills contribute significantly to the collective process of creating music or art in general. We prefer to be open-minded not only as a band but also as listeners. Besides, we shouldn't forget that in the history of music, there are so many examples of artists that got involved in many different genres. Let's take for example Aynslay Dunbar, the drummer that has played in the most various bands, from Frank Zappa's, Lou Reed's, or David Bowie's band to Whitesnake. Or Simon Phillips, who played in 801 (Phil Manzanera and Brian Eno), or in the synthwave '80s band Our Daughter's Wedding, and is the same person that also played in Judas Priest. What we are trying to say, is, that you cannot wear blinkers in art, there are just the things you like and the things you don't and this is totally subjective, nothing more, nothing less. 4.It is interesting that the lyrics are written by Stavi, a member of the group that does not play any music in the band. Stavi was the singer (in German - she is translator and German teacher) of "Nie Frei" song that was part of a Kernkrach compilation (Rekordfahrt Negativ II) one year ago. All other CM songs are written by her in English and sung by Nikos. Stavi, how did you resist the temptation to sing another song in the 2nd lp? CM: There are so many examples of bands who regarded their lyricists as equal group members. Let's remember Keith Reid, the lyricist of every Procol Harum song, or Peter Sinfield, lyricist and co-founder of King Crimson, who also wrote by the way the English lyrics for the Italian legendary group Premiata Forneria Marconi; or Stanley Warren, who wrote wonderful lyrics for Silver Apples. In our band, we feel free to take sometimes different roles, which have to do with music or sketches or visuals etc. Stavi's main contribution to the band is to write the lyrics and to incorporate them in the music that the other four members produce. "Nie Frei" was a spontaneous creation together with Nikos, we liked it and we kept the song. So, it doesn't have to do with temptation, but rather with the freedom to express yourself in any way you feel like on a particular moment and this freedom is something that every member of the band has. 5.The music in this new LP is richer, more 70's oriented than the pure synth sound of the 1st LP.... What was the reason for this move? CM: There isn't a specific reason for this, when someone creates something, he/she doesn't necessarily have precise reasons in mind, which can be explained with logic,

you just feel the urge and the need to make music and you get down and do it. As we mentioned in your first question, we have many different influences, not only from the pure synth sound, as you call it. One thing that we can, however, say, is, that all the analogue synths that we play with, are original '70s/'80s models and, in combination with the bass and the drums, our sound is of course connected to the sound of that older music era. 6.Can you talk a little bit about the Greek scene? CM: The Greek scene was and still is quite restricted. Back in the '80s there were some independent labels, like Creep Records and Smash Records that helped significantly in creating a space for this particular music and for the bands that represented it, such as Metro Decay, Headleaders, Art of Parties, Reporters, Villa 21, Yell-o-Yell, Fear Condition, South of No North etc. Later, around '00s, some other labels, like Eirkti Records re- released rare '80s stuff, for example Xoris Perideraio, Chapter 24 etc. In the more recent years, there has been a revival of the genre, not only in Greece but also abroad. As far as Greece is concerned, a few of the modern labels that promote new bands are Geheimnis, Man Out Of A Man, Fabrika Records etc. Some of the Greek bands, which are active at the moment (concerning discography and live concerts), are: Selofan, Tango Mangalore, Incirrina, Data Fragments, Kalte Nacht, The Man & His Failures, Era of Fear, Radio Sect, Dramachine etc.
