Intervista: BESTIAL MOUTHS
Disponibile già da diversi mesi nel formato digitale, è uscito da qualche giorno anche in vinile, “Resurrected In Black”, ultimo album di Bestial Mouths, progetto ormai da tempo saldamente nelle mani della sola Lynette Cerezo, artista americana “a tutto tondo”. Nell’attesa di occuparci dettagliatamente del disco nella recensione che pubblicheremo nei prossimi giorni, abbiamo parlato un po' con Lynette di passato, presente e futuro di Bestial Mouths. 1. Torniamo indietro nel tempo: raccontaci come e quando nasce Bestial Mouths. Perché la scelta di questo nome? Ha un significato particolare?
Bestial Mouths è stato creato con il mio ex partner dalle ceneri di due band precedenti, SWFT WNGS e prima ancora African Greys, da cui la canzone "We Bestial Singing Mouths" ha ispirato il nuovo moniker. Attraverso la sua evoluzione, Bestial Mouths è sempre stata una cosa “viziosa”, pronta a mostrare le fauci, a dimostrare il sui essere sul punto di espoldere. Quello che mostro sul palco è quello che c'è dentro tutti noi: una bestia selvaggia e tremante addestrata dalla vita a mordere.
2. Quali sono gli artisti che ti hanno ispirato di più? In certi passaggi vocali (ad esempio in "The Falls", la prima traccia del nuovo album) non posso fare a meno di pensare a Diamanda Galas.
Ovviamente Diamanda ha avuto un grande impatto su di me in generale; è una donna incredibile! Potenti cantanti femminili sono sempre state un'enorme ispirazione per me. Artisti come PJ Harvey, Meredith Monk e ovviamente le prime leggende gotiche come Siouxsie hanno toccato il mio lavoro. Molte incredibili artiste contemporanee stanno ispirando Bestial Mouths nella sua forma attuale: Chelsea Wolfe, Lingua Ignota, Zanias ed ADULT.ad esempio.
3. Parlaci di "Resurrected In Black". È un concept album o ogni canzone rappresenta un capitolo separato?
"RESURRECTEDINBLACK" e il precedente EP "INSHROUDSS" sono stati scritti contemporaneamente; entrambi sanguinano l'uno nell'altro, raccontando la storia del mio trauma nel divorzio, l'incertezza nell’andare avanti, come l'esistenza a volte può sembrare condizionata da catene che ti trascinano nelle acque nere ... tutte cose vere, sai? È stato catartico avere uno sbocco per questi pensieri e queste idee, ma ancora di più per mantenere in vita Bestial Mouths attraverso quella creazione, per resuscitarla in una nuova forma.
4. Come si è evoluta la musica di Bestial Mouths dal primo album (Hissing Veil) ad oggi?
Bestial Mouths è cambiato parecchio nel corso degli anni; i nostri lavori precedenti avevano un sound molto più post-punk tribale, influenzato sia dall'attuale revival Deathrock che dall'incredibile scena "Death Disco" della Bay Area; artisti straordinari come Black Ice, Sixteens e The Vanishing hanno avuto un grande impatto su di noi, ed il risultato è stato un mostro dal suono più duro. Mentre il nuovo materiale è più guidato dall'elettronica, più darkwave, più lucido ... Messaggi simili ma espressi in modo diverso. C'è più spazio anche per una bellezza lenta e cupa
5. Se non sbaglio, ora vivi a Berlino. Quali sono le principali differenze tra Stati Uniti ed Europa. Come hai vissuto e come stai vivendo questi tempi legati al Covid 19?
In realtà sono tornata negli Stati Uniti con il mio attuale partner, viviamo appena fuori Los Angeles. La differenza principale è che qui i nazisti hanno abiti più belli.
Ovviamente il periodo è difficile, ed è reso più difficile dagli idioti che negano la scienza, ma ho la fortuna di avere un buon partner e due dolci cani da salvataggio per impedirmi di impazzire. Inoltre viviamo circondati da pavoni, che mi svegliano ogni giorno con le loro urla., come ora… Ehi amico, ti ho sentito! 😊
6. Quanto è importante la dimensione "live" per Bestial Mouths? Ti manca andare in tour e suonare dal vivo?
Con il mio background artistico, di design e di danza, cerco di inserire molta presentazione visiva nei nostri spettacoli dal vivo: non solo l'estetica è una parte enorme di ciò che voglio creare, è anche parte del rituale dello scambio di energia che io voglio ottenere dal pubblico. Ho fatto alcuni di questi live streaming in quarantena, ma non sono la stessa cosa. Quel rituale è parte integrante di Bestial Mouths.
7. Hai avuto modo di collaborare con Alison Lewis (alias Zoe Zanias): cosa puoi dirci di questa collaborazione? Quali sono gli altri artisti con cui vorresti lavorare?
Conosco Alison da anni; è una cara amica ed è sempre fantastico lavorare con lei. L'etichetta con cui abbiamo pubblicato RESURRECTEDINBLACK, Rune & Ruin, siamo noi. Prova a indovinare quale di noi è Rune e qual è Ruin… Penso che rimarrai piacevolmente sorpreso! Ovviamente, come detto Diamanda Galas sarebbe un sogno. Mi piacerebbe lavorare con Shannon di Light Asylum, Lingua Ignota, The Haxan Cloak….David Lynch, chiamami!
8. Mi sembra che i video clip siano molto importanti per te. Ho sempre notato una grande raffinatezza nella loro costruzione. Sei tu che scrivi la sceneggiatura e si prende cura dei dettagli?
Controllo sempre l'intera storia, ma dò la mia fiducia ai registi che realizzano i video di Bestial Mouths. Cerco persone che condividano la mia visione del mondo.
9. Qualche anno fa siete stati a suonare a Milano (non ricordo se fosse l'unica data italiana) come parte del tour dell'album "Bestial Mouths" ... purtroppo è stata una serata con pochissimo pubblico. Che ricordi hai? Ti piacerebbe tornare a suonare in Italia?
Sì, se ricordo bene, era la nostra prima volta in Italia. Il luogo e il suono erano incredibili, insieme al promotore e agli artisti locali. È stato un peccato che il locale non fosse molto frequentato quella sera. Ma ovviamente tornerei e suonerei ancora in Italia; a parte le persone fantastiche, il cibo è straordinario ed è stato un piacere meraviglioso passarci nel corso di quel tour!
1. Let's go back in time: tell us how and when Bestial Mouths was born. Why the choice of this name? Does it have a particular meaning?
Bestial Mouths was created with my former partner from the ashes of two previous bands, SWFT WNGS and before that African Greys—from which the song 'We Bestial Singing Mouths' inspired the new moniker. Through its evolution, Bestial Mouths has always been a vicious thing, with teeth bared in a display of ugly expulsion. What I show onstage is what's inside all of us—a raw, shivering beast trained by life to bite.
2. Who are the artists who have inspired you the most? In certain vocal passages (for example in "The Falls", the first track of the new album) I can't help but think of Diamanda Galas.
Of course Diamanda has had a major impact on me in general; she's an incredible woman and her words carve out slices from the world. Powerful female vocalists have always been a huge inspiration to me. Artists like PJ Harvey, Meredith Monk, and of course early goth legends like Siouxsie have touched my work. A lot of amazing contemporary womxn artists are inspiring Bestial Mouths in its current form — Chelsea Wolfe, Lingua Ignota, Zanias and ADULT. get played a lot over here.
3. Tell us about "Resurrected In Black". Is it a concept album or does each song represent a separate chapter?
"RESURRECTEDINBLACK" and the preceding EP "INSHROUDSS" were written at the same time; both bleed into each other, telling the tale of my trauma in divorce, the uncertainty of continuation, how existence can feel like chains dragging you down into the black waters...all real groovy stuff, you know? It has been cathartic to have an outlet for these thoughts and ideas, but even more so to keep Bestial Mouths alive through that creation—to resurrect it in a new form.
4. How has Bestial Mouths' music evolved from the first album (Hissing Veil) to today?
Bestial Mouths has changed quite a bit over the years; our earlier work had much more of a tribal post-punk sound, influenced both by the then-current Deathrock revival and the incredible Bay Area 'Death Disco' scene; amazing artists like Black Ice, Sixteens, and The Vanishing made a big impact with us, and the result was a harsher-sounding monster. Whereas the new material is more electronic-driven, more darkwavey, sleeker...similar messages but expressed differently. There's more space for slow, somber beauty as well.
5. If I'm not mistaken, you now live in Berlin. What are the main differences between the US and Europe. How did you live and how are you living these times linked to Covid 19?
I've actually moved back to the US with my current partner, just outside LA. The main difference here—the Nazis have nicer suits.
Obviously it's been difficult—and made more difficult by science-denying idiots—but I'm lucky enough to have a good partner and two sweet rescue dogs to keep me from going too crazy. Plus we live surrounded by peacocks, who wake me up every day with their screams. Buddy, I hear ya.
6. How important is the “live” dimension to Bestial Mouths? Do you miss going on tour and playing live?
With my performance art, design and dance background, I try to put a lot of visual presentation into our live shows—not only is the aesthetic a huge part of what I want to create, it's also part of the ritual of energy exchange that I get from the audience. I've done a few of these quarantine livestreams, and they're just not the same. That ritual is integral to Bestial Mouths.
7. You got to collaborate with Alison Lewis (alias Zoe Zanias): what can you tell us about this collaboration? What are other artists you would like to work with?
I've know Alison for years; she's a dear friend and it's always awesome to work with her. The label we released RESURRECTEDINBLACK on, Rune & Ruin, is us. Try to guess which one of us is which; I think you'll be pleasantly surprised!
Obviously, as mentioned Diamanda Galas would be a dream. I'd love to work with Shannon from Light Asylum, Lingua Ignota, The Haxan Cloak, clipping. David Lynch, call me!
8. It seems to me that video clips are very important to you. I have always noticed a great refinement in their construction. Are you the one who writes the script and takes care of the details?
I'm always guiding the overall story, but I give my trust to the directors who make Bestial's videos. I seek out people who share a sympathetic worldview.
9. A few years ago you were in Milan (I don't remember if it was the only Italian date) as part of the tour of the album "Bestial Mouths" ... unfortunately it was an evening with very little audience. What memories do you have? Would you like to go back to playing in Italy?
Yes, if I remember correctly, it was our first time in Italy. The venue and sound were incredible, along with the promoter and local acts. It was a shame it was not heavily attended. But of course I would come back and play more in Italy; aside from the great people, the amazing food was a wonderful treat when we were touring!
